Major Institutional Events

The Office of the President is charged with the planning and implementation of major institutional events: Family Weekend in September, the Fredericksburg Forum in fall, the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series in the spring, and Commencement in May. For detailed information on these programs, see the links at the right.

Family Weekend
Family Weekend is a time for families and friends to reconnect at the University. Students have an opportunity to show guests the places that have become meaningful to them, as well as to celebrate their connection with the UMW community. This weekend encompasses over 40 events for families of current UMW students. Hallmarks of the weekend include a study abroad fair; a tour of Brompton, home of the President; and faculty and department showcases.

The Fredericksburg Forum
The University of Mary Washington brings nationally known speakers to the Fredericksburg Forum. The purpose of the Forum is to provide opportunities to explore the political, social, cultural, and scientific trends and issues that affect our community. The program is self-sustaining relying on ticket sales.

The Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series
The Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series is a public lecture series presented by the UMW Department of History and American Studies. This program is a series of lectures throughout the spring semester that focuses on the lives of important current and historical figures. Elements of the program include a presentation by a speaker or author followed by a Q&A with the audience. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Graduate and Undergraduate Commencement
Commencement is a time to celebrate, as a university, the accomplishments of our graduates. It is a time to acknowledge dedication, perserverence, and academic excellence through time-honored traditions and to joyfully look to the future.
