Mary Washington’s last master plan guided campus development from the late 1990s through the first decade of this millennium. The current effort will inform Mary Washington’s development over the next 10 to 15 years.  Another reason for master planning is to remain on par with our peer institutions. In order to continue to attract top-notch students, UMW needs to stay abreast of prospective students’ expectations.  Rather than approach campus growth and improvement haphazardly, the master plan provides a framework that will accomplish several vital goals:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Establish a direction for facilities growth and renewal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain the architectural integrity of the campus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Define campus boundaries and points of entry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reinforce the pedestrian character of the campus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhance the green space and quality of landscaping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improve campus navigation and parking<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>The purpose of the master plan is not to identify facilities for demolition but rather to assess each building’s ability to support critical campus functions over a finite period of time. If buildings are deemed inadequate, a range of options is explored, from renovation to replacement. If replacement is regarded as the most appropriate step, maintaining the existing architecture is a paramount consideration.<\/p><p>Master Planning is an ongoing process; as the University’s needs change so will the Master Plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PurposeMaster planning is essential for higher education institutions. Are there enough classrooms and labs? How can the historical attributes of the campus be enhanced? Can the dining halls accommodate the number of students, faculty, and staff that need to be fed? Is parking adequate and are parking facilities in the right places? What is the condition of the residence halls and is renovation feasible to bring them up to current ADA standards? Can green space be improved?<\/p><p>The Master Plan Committee examined the various functionalities of the University and agreed upon areas that should be addressed within the Master Plan.  The proposed Master Plan recommends 12 projects that are considered transformational to the University.  We have highlighted a few of the recommendations below.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>HOUSING<\/strong> – There is a recognized need that several housing facilities require renovation.  The Master Plan has noted those facilities and allowed for an orderly and timely schedule for renovations to take place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ACADEMIC SPACE<\/strong> – Academic Space is currently at a premium and additional space will be needed in the future.  Suggested in the Master Plan is an addition to the Jepson Science Center in conjunction with the new Information Technologies Convergence Center as well as the renovations that will start in late spring at Woodard and Mercer Halls for the College of Business and Department of Psychology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PARKING<\/strong> – As the University continues to grow, so will the need for additional parking spaces.  The Proposed Plan notes that a new parking deck can be added on site of the Powhatan\/Thornton\/Pizza Hut Parking lot. University of Mary Washington’s Master Plan Webpage!  The Master Plan Steering Committee has been working to develop a Campus Master Plan that will maintain the historical and architectural integrity and beauty of the campus, while addressing the expectations of current and future students, faculty and staff.  It is important to remember the Master Plan is an ongoing process; as the University’s needs change so will this document.<\/p><p>In 2011, the Master Plan Steering Committee presented a Draft Master Plan to the University Community which was open for comments and feedback.  The feedback given initiated the creation of the UMW Preservation Plan which rates each building on factors such as its architectural integrity, setting or location, historical significance, and its connection to the University Community.  The UMW Preservation Plan contributed to the selection of the Chandler site as a suitable location for the Student Center and will continue to be used in the future to help guide major decisions for facilities on campus.<\/p><p>We hope that you take the time to look over the Proposed Master Plan and the Preservation Plan.  A hard copy of the Master Plan may be found in
