Notes taken by Jerry Slezak

Present: Rosemary Arneson, Jeff McClurken, Hall Cheshire, Jerry Slezak, Leanna Giancarlo, Mary Kaylor, Shelley Keith, Zach Whalen, Megan Petter, Ciara Peacock, Jim Groom (chair). Debra Schleef (guest).

Notes on Jim’s visit with President Hurley:

  • President thanked Jim for his presentation and recommendation on providing regular funding for Primary Computer replacements. President Hurley said he was aware of the problem.

o   The group discussed this issue, and determined that we have presented our advice to the president on this issue. We hope some funding can be moved in this direction in the near future. The PTAC will continue to monitor this issue.

Notes on Student Technology Survey

  • Debra Schleef attended this meeting to speak on the progress with the Student Technology Survey:

o   Committee got to take a look at the survey – opinions were positive.

o   IRB Application is in progress

o   Debra asked the PTAC for permission to use survey results in possible research in the future – the group agreed.

o   Should be going out 2nd week in February

o   Small prizes will be given away via lottery among all students who complete the survey.

o   We discussed a social media push to get students to complete the survey, and also possibly creating some content for EagleVision.

ThinkLab Future

  • Rosemary Arneson brought up the general topic of the ThinkLab and the future of this space in the Simpson Library in lieu of the resignation of Tim Owens – one of the primary forces in setup and ongoing management of the ThinkLab.
  • Rosemary expressed concern that the space had no clear ownership, and that with the start of the DKC, DTLT aides were no longer available to provide support in the ThinkLab. It was also unclear what the ongoing relationship with COE would be as George Meadows (another strong startup partner) has several COE makerspaces running for COE in Trinkle and Stafford.
  • It was asked if there was a defined mission for the ThinkLab. Rosemary said that nothing as formal as that has been produced, but she would think about taking a first stab at that.
  • It was also asked what the PTAC role is with regard to this space. There were not clear answers on this.
  • It was decided this is a worthy topic to continue discussion on in the future.
