The Office of the President is located on the first floor of George Washington Hall, the main administration building on the Fredericksburg Campus.  The office is open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (with the exception of holidays), throughout the year.  Inquiries may be made by calling 540-654-1301 or via email at president@umw.edu.

The duties of the President, as charged by the Board of Visitors, are to supervise the entire program of activities of the University.  These duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • institutional, faculty, and educational leadership and management;
  • fostering positive external relationships with federal, state and local governments;
  • fundraising, development, and public and alumni relations;
  • long range and strategic planning and budget formulation;
  • recruitment, appointment, promotion and dismissal of faculty and staff members.

The Chief of Staff reports to the President and works very closely on all matters related to the University.  In addition, the Chief of Staff serves as liaison to the Board of Visitors and serves in the role of Clerk of the Board.  This position is responsible for the efficient operation of the President’s Office and assists the President in work with state legislators, regional business and government leaders, UMW boards and committees, alumni, donors, and friends.  On occasion, the Chief of Staff represents the President and the University to the external community.

Also reporting to the President is the Special Assistant to the President for Diversity and Inclusion.  The Special Assistant serves as support for students, faculty and staff to provide resources, programs and advocacy on diversity and inclusion at the University of Mary Washington.   This individual serves as the University’s Title IX coordinator, providing oversight to all Title IX issues.  The Special Assistant also serves as the University Ombudsman, a resource for all students, faculty and staff to complement other existing channels of communication and a neutral party for any who may have university-related concerns.

The Special Assistant to the President for University Events is charged with the planning and implementation of major institutional events, including the following: Family Weekend, the Fredericksburg Forum in fall, the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series, and Commencement ceremonies.  In addition, the Special Assistant and the staff of the Office of University Events and Conferencing oversees a variety of large and small events and celebrations throughout the year, provides event planning and consultation services, and coordinates a comprehensive summer conferencing schedule.
